Topic: Search Catalog versus Bookmarks for Large Manual (Via Email)

I have a large manual in Word and need to make it available to users in pdf with a search capability that leads them to specific sections and a navigable table of contents.
To get the search capability, I thought that I would take the Word document, break it into a lot of separate documents and convert each to pdf. Then I can use the Catalog Tool to create a Search Catalog that will return results that bring the user to specific documents, which are sections of the original Word document. When the user selects an item from the search results, one of the pdfs will open.
At the same time, the user experience should be as if they are seeing only one huge document and can navigate from anywhere to anywhere else. The user doesn't need to know that there are many pdfs. I hoped to do this by having all the bookmarks for all the pdfs appear in the bookmark pane of each file.
Can I use these two features together? Is there another way to achieve what I am trying to do?
Thanks for any and all help.
