Topic: Wildcard in File Name

I have a button with a Javascript action. When the button is clicked a loop loops through all the fields in the form and locks them, thusly:

for (var cntr = 0;cntr < this.numFields;cntr++)
{this.getField(this.getNthFieldName(cntr)).readonly = true };

However, now I would like to control for a number of fields with certain names, and make them readonly=false.

Since we are loading these forms to a database, we cannot use the dot '.'in the field names, as it messes up our database. So I can't use that functionality. Is there any other way to see if a field has a particular name, like with a wildcard, and if so, make it readonly=false? Such as:
if fieldname = agcy* then
fieldname.readonly=false
end if

Or something like that. :)
Thanks
