Topic: InDesign: Apply spot color to placed psd?

I'm doing a 2-color job, and I need to apply a spot color to a grayscale psd with an alpha feathered edge that I have placed in my InDesign file. The psd is on top of a halftone gradient, so the image can't be saved as a tif (it's not on top of a white background).
When I select the psd image with the direct selection tool and select the spot color in the swatch menu, the image color remains black even though the square color icon in the swatch palette indicates the object is now the spot color. When I preflighted the file there were only the 2 spot colors listed, however when I output the separations I get 3 plates, the 2 spots plus a black with the psd image on it.
Is there a way to make this work? Or is it working even though the program gives little-to-no indication that it is?
