Topic: Digital signatures and automation

I'm a newbie to PDF stuff. I'm working on a workflow project where we might have to use PDF as document format. The solution is web-based, and two inter-related requirements we have on this project are:
1 -The documents must be digitally signed by the user. This digital signature is PKI-based, and it must be processed at a smart card - where the certificate is stored - that will require a biometric authentication to allow access to the certificate.
2 - We must provide this digital signature feature so that it can be applied at once to batches of documents. The application will have to programmaticaly control the Acrobat software so that the user will not have to interact with it (i.e, the user will not sign each document individually by operating Acrobat; the application is supposed to handle the automation)
I've downloaded the Acrobat 5 SDK (I'm not a member of Adobe ASN), and so far have concluded that I need to develop a digital signature plug-in of my own to the digital signature part, but I'm not sure if the automation part is deliverable through the JSObject. The IAC (OLE and DDE) doesn´t appear to be what I need.
Am I on the right path, or is there something I´m missing?
Is this kind of automation possible via JSObject? Does the Acrobat 6 SDK come with some other kind of automation that I can use to deliver this? Or this kind of automation is not possible at all with Adobe Acrobat 6?
I realize it's a lot of questions, and I thank you for any answers.
