I've built indexes from a pdf doc base of over 70,000 PDF's with no probs.

Acrobat Catalog comes bundled with Acrobat version 5 and Acrobat 6, you
create a new index file and select the files you want included in the
search. once the index is built you either attach the index to the PDF
file or to Acrobat the application itself. The help has excellent
instructions on both building and attaching indexes.

nothing I can find, but the larger the index the longer searching/building
the index will take. As a rule of thumb I would split indexes up into
smaller logical groupings, but sometimes this isn't practical (since only
one index can be attached a PDF at a time).
>3. If both work, does anyone have any search time benchmark figures?
never bothered - it's lightning quick to build search indexes. also if
youre after searching your PDF files over the net have a look at ARTS PDF
