Though in Acrobat 6, you can also use SOAP for communications
(which does, admittedly sit on top of HTTP, but the idea is good!)

No.

In that case, you don't need to do anything with Acrobat -
just adjust your Internet Configurations in Mac OS. You can map any
URL type/prefix to any application.
