havent seen this one before but a little search results in some related
articles and troubleshooting (see below), I also get the feeling this is
related to Certificates in some way (Either not downloading correctly or
not authenticating over the net)

I found a lot of useful information from the user-to-user forum which I
suggest you pay a visit to as it's not reachable by
google. http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html -> Choose Adobe Reader

the other observation is that it's a big giant mess that seems to need a
lot of work from Adobe.

obviously the best way to solve the problem is to call and speak to Adobe
personally, I'd also suggest phoning the supplier of the eBooks to see if
they can provide some support also.
