The PDF file format specification defines a lot of additional
functionality that goes well beyond the current capabilities of Acrobat,
Distiller and Reader. For instance Reference XObjects have been around
for a while but are not supported by any PDF product - creator or
consumer (that I know of). The fact Acrobat acts as a defacto "PDF
validator" means that entire chunks of potential PDF functionality are
not (realistically) available for PDF plug-ins or PDF developers to
leverage. I feel it is similar to the HTML browser wars of a few years
ago where the official HTML was much richer than the browsers support.
Do the PDF developers on the panel find this annoying or restrictive?
Does the PDF industry need a PDF validation tool that validates against
the full PDF specification? Would Adobe care to comment on this
situation? Do they intend to broaden the set of features Acrobat and/or
Reader support?
