Topic: Find StemV for FontDescriptor

I'm trying to work with fonts, and I'm a bit confused as to how I'm supposed to get the value of the StemV key in a FontDescriptor object.
For those who don't want to look it up, StemV is "the thickness, measured horizontally, of the dominant vertical stems of glyphs in the font." (PDF 1.4 Specification, 357). Now the question is how to suck it out of an AFM (or even PF[AB]) file...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
