After no previous problems producing PDFs, I am now suddenly unable to get a PDF distilled. This is with Acrobat 4.0.5 for Classic on OSX 10.1.5. I also had a copy of 5.0.5 loaded but uninstalled that while I have been testing for this problem. ATM 4.6.1 handles the fonts on Classic.
I get "Offending command: showpage" or "Offending command: distillsave:" when I attempt to print from Quark 4.1 or distilling an EPS page from a Quark doc or distilling an Illustrator 9 doc. I can make PDFs printing from Quark if I use PDFWriter, but have little control over compression settings so files are too large. I have made PDFs from Illustrator if I use only system fonts [font substitutions are made in some cases].
Steps already taken:
1. Rebuild Classic desktop
2. Run Norton Utilities Disk Doctor
3. Install new AdobePS 8.8 driver
3. Uninstall/reinstall Acrobat 4 and Quark
4. Uninstalled InDesign 2 [the only new app loaded since this problem started]
Most frustrating is that, after each time I do one - or all - of the 3 steps listed above, it will make ONE correct PDF of a document before reverting to "Offending Error" codes. With the inconsistency of the problem, I'm running out of ideas. The Adobe support on their website has not been helpful so far.
This started as a problem for only certain Quark docs using an AdobeMM font, but now it is with any Quark doc and more as I have tried more tests. Instead of narrowing the search, it gets wider. I'm wondering if I need to strip the hard drive and make a clean install of the OS.
Any suggestions on a cure or how I can better pinpoint the source for this problem?
