Something is wrong with what you describe.
If you select the Acrobat Distiller printer - that is, the one installed by Acrobat - and do NOT select "print to file" it continues and makes a PDF file for you. No need to run Distiller separately.
This sounds like a Distiller printer set up separately - perhaps by renaming another one or otherwise manually set up. Is that the case?
