In both cases, Acrobat 5 will report an error and then fail
to draw the image :(. It will also display a message (again) about
using newer features and the need to update.

Haven't tried that - don't know what it will do.

Either Acrobat will fail to read the document or it won't
matter - since the only tool that creates this stuff (that is in any
serious use) is Acrobat and it either does all or just structure.

Again, I believe you will get an error - though I've not
tried. You have a file that demonstrates this, Olaf??
