Paper Capture plug-in (re)released for Acrobat 5.0 Adobe does an about-face on Paper Capture online
25 May 2001
Adobe Systems Incorporated has quietly released a downloadable version of the Paper Capture plug-in for Windows users of Acrobat 5.0.
On April 10, 2001, Planet PDF reported that the Paper Capture plug-in that had been included with previous versions of Acrobat -- including Acrobat 4.05 -- was no longer available. As we mentioned, this feature had been replaced by an Adobe Web-hosted service called "Paper Capture Online."
At the time, Duff Johnson, president of Document Solutions, Inc, a well-respected imaging service bureau in Oakland, CA saw a potential backlash with this decision. He said, "Eliminating the Paper Capture plug-in is an unfortunate decision for Adobe's customers." Johnson went on to say that "... for some, dropping Paper Capture will represent sufficient reason not to upgrade to Acrobat 5."
The release of the Paper Capture plug-in is likely to remove this disincentive, and encourage those holding back to upgrade to Acrobat 5.0 - at least for Windows users. (NOTE: Document conversion through the Paper Capture Plug-in is limited to 50 pages per document.) However, for Mac users of Acrobat, it seems that there is no respite just yet - as often seems to be the case, the divide and disparity between Mac and Windows is increasing with each new release of Acrobat.
