Seybold Hot Picks

As is their custom on the eve of an upcoming Seybold Seminars conference, the editors of The Seybold Report have selected 16 products as "the 'must-see' items as you make your way around the (Seybold San Francisco 2002) expo floor."

This fall's standouts -- aka the "Hot Picks" -- are listed and described on the Web site, with the selections divided into the following categories:

Among the PDF-oriented products and companies in the high-profile selections -- with brief excerpts from the "Hot Picks" descriptions -- are:

  • [Content Management] Documentum: "Will unveil a new client software interface to its enterprise content-management (ECM) system. Called Digital Asset Manager (DAM), the software is significant not so much for its features (many of which are common in digital asset management systems), but because this is the first desktop client from a mainstream ECM system vendor to feature rich-media functionality aimed at creative professionals."

  • [Prepress Workflow] AC&C HSH Group: "The small, privately held PDF tool developer based in Poland, will show PuzzleFlow, its PDF-based workflow system first introduced in March and in use at Poland's largest daily newspaper, Gazeta Wyborcza. PuzzleFlow is a PDF-based automated workflow that provides a variety of integrated engines natively processing both PDF and Job ticket files. According to AC&C HSH Group, there is no need for intermediate files and a hot or drop folder to process complex task chains."

  • [Prepress Workflow] Artwork Systems: "Well known for its Nexus system, incorporating elements of its two previous prepress workflow systems. This has been successful in driving numerous output devices, usually in larger shops. Now, however, the company has developed an entirely new system, code-named 'Odyssey,' for small to mid-sized printers, trade shops and in-plants. Odyssey is designed entirely for OS X, and utilizes PDF 1.4 as its internal file format. It is a modular, hot folder-driven system, utilizing modules that the company owns, including Enfocus PitStop and Artwork Systems' trapping technology, as well as third-party applications, such as Distiller."

  • [Prepress Workflow] Xinet: "Prepress and publishing system users have long been familiar with Xinet's OPI server product, FullPress, which is now at version 11. Running on several different Unix platforms, including Apple's OS X Server, as well as Windows NT/2000, FullPress supports a wide variety of image file formats and has added an impressive array of features for optimizing PostScript and PDF workflows. It also works in tandem with Xinet's digital asset-management software, WebNative. Xinet will be previewing FullPress' new functionality, which will incorporate PDF/X-1a into its workflow."

  • [Tools for Creatives] Adobe Systems: "One long-time Adobe developer called InCopy 2.0 "the biggest advancement in a new version of a product" he'd ever seen. In the newspaper market, those words appear to ring true as InCopy is helping to drive the market transition from dependence on Quark to reliance on Adobe InDesign for pagination. Designed on the same tenets as Quark's CopyDesk text editor, InCopy stands up to the rigors of newspaper publishing while offering a wild-card feature that really helps it stand out about its peers: native XML support."

  • [Tools for Creatives] Markzware: "Markzware, the well-known developer of preflighting tools, will debut a product designed to help creatives ensure that their files are prepress ready. Markzware HawkEye is a preflighting plug-in designed to find and fix errors in many of today's popular desktop content-creation applications, including QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat and more."

  • [Digital Printing] Objective Advantage: "Objective Advantage created a series of Job Definition Format (JDF) developer tools, which it now plans to sell and which received our Hot Pick. The toolkit, called the JDF Development Platform, will allow developers to more easily integrate JDF, JMF and PrintTalk into their Web, client/server and embedded applications."
