PR: Global Graphics Launches Version 3 of Jaws PDF Server
New levels of security and flexibility introduced
7 October 2002
Cambridge, UK -- The latest version of Jaws PDF Server(TM), a centralized server-based solution for Portable Document Format (PDF) file creation and distribution, has been launched today by Global Graphics Software, a subsidiary of Global Graphics S A, and a leading developer and supplier of high-performance solutions for document creation and printing. The new version features greater integration with Microsoft Office, incorporation of the latest version of Jaws PDF Creator(TM), higher levels of security for confidential documents, and improved color accuracy of the PDF files created.
Jaws PDF Server is a powerful, but highly economical, tool that lets system administrators easily create automated PDF workflows that manage the conversion of users' documents into PDF files and subsequent routing to downstream processes. The new features in Jaws PDF Server 3.0 provide an enhanced level of integration and flexibility, and include:
- Integration with the latest release of Jaws PDF Creator 3.0. Users can convert documents from virtually any application into the universal PDF file format that retains the exact format, graphics, fonts and color of the original and allows them to be opened by anyone using Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader(TM) freeware. The self-contained and compact PDF files can be distributed, viewed, edited, stored, published onto web sites and CD-ROMs, and printed on any printer.
- Support for the Adobe PDF 1.4 specification with 128-bit encryption, in addition to PDF 1.3. This allows users to define and produce encrypted PDF files (e.g. restricted viewing, editing and printing capabilities) with a high level of security from confidential or sensitive source documents.
- Enhanced integration with Microsoft Office for Windows, a popular software package used by many organizations. Jaws PDF Server installs an icon within the toolbar in Microsoft Word, and also in PowerPoint, allowing business users to create PDF files from these popular Microsoft Office applications very easily. These toolbar icons also provide users with the ability to retain document structures, such as bookmarks and hyperlinks, from the original document within the PDF files in order to improve reader access to information, particularly within lengthy documents.
- Greater color accuracy in PDF files containing device-independent CIE-based colors. CIE-based color spaces, such as CalGray, CalRGB, Lab or an ICC profile, are now stored within the Jaws PDF file. This is an important feature for those users within an organization using PDF files for high-end proofing and print production.
- Support for Microsoft Windows XP Professional as a certified server platform, in addition to Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Terminal Services.
- Free upgrade to version 3.0 for existing registered Jaws PDF Server users via www.jawspdf.com
The system can be configured as a virtual printer to support any native application and also accepts PostScript(R), PDF and TIFF(TM) (Tagged Image File Format) files directly. A post processing option in Jaws PDF Server can be used to define extra actions after each PDF file has been created. These subsequent downstream processes include enterprise-wide distribution, local/remote printing, Internet/Intranet publishing, entry into document management systems or archiving etc. Jaws PDF Server significantly reduces the cost of multi-user ownership through its competitive Corporate Licensing Programme and provides powerful automatic workflow design capabilities.
Jaws PDF Server licenses are available from 50 to an unlimited number of users located anywhere in an organization on a Local area network (LAN) or Wide area network (WAN) to produce PDF files from PostScript(R), EPS, TIFF(TM) and PDF files created on Windows(R), Mac and Unix platforms.
Workflow Design Flexibility
A server-based software solution, Jaws PDF Server makes it easy for IT system administrators to design and centrally manage any number of distribution procedures according to document destinations. Administrators can make these procedures available across the network as "virtual printers". Users on the network can either drag-and-drop files into a desktop hot folder for automatic processing or select document destination via the printer chooser menu.
Jaws PDF Server consists of three modules that integrate to automate and optimize PDF file conversion: SmartInput(TM) and Queuer(TM) control the file input and output paths, while Jaws PDF Creator(TM) creates the optimized PDF files. A drag-and-drop graphical interface simplifies configuration and workflow administration. Pre-defined PDF settings are created and the systems administrator can make these available as printer drivers or hot folders across different departments within an organization. PDF files created using Jaws PDF Server can subsequently be used with Jaws PDF Editor(TM), Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) products, or any other third-party PDF tools.
Jaws PDF Server's load-balancing capability can be configured to spread the workload throughout a cluster of servers in a workgroup, increasing productivity and throughput.
US-based Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc (MEPPI) uses Jaws PDF Server to implement the creation of PDF documents throughout its headquarters Warrendale, PA. The company supplies electrical and electronic products, systems and services to the North American power systems, metals production, rail transportation, and water treatment industries. "We chose Jaws PDF Server for its flexibility and ease of integration and management with the Windows 2000 network architecture. By far this has been a superior product for creating PDF documents," says Kevin Beamer, IT Manager.
Jaws PDF Server is the latest addition to the expanding range of Jaws PDF products from Global Graphics which are designed to bring robust and cost-effective solutions to document creation and control, with unique products for managing effective and secure distribution and web/hard copy publishing.
