With windswept fires currently raging out of control throughout heavily populated Southern California, the Los Angeles Times doesn't have to look far these days to find a 'hot' story of interest to its readers. Driven by unconctrollable Santa Ana winds, the fires have destroyed hundreds of homes north, east and south of the LA metropolitan area. The National Edition of the newspaper is available online as separate PDF pages, which display "the layout, fonts, graphics and photos as they appear in the newspaper."

In addition, the Times is maintaining a special "Southern California Firestorm" area on its Web site (Registration required) with special multimedia coverage of the smoke-filled disaster. The current online coverage includes daily PDF-based graphics that combine satellite photographs, county-by-county reports, detailed maps, weather forecasts and key damage and fatality statistics, including "Southern California on Fire" and "Monday's developments in Southland fires."
