This week in PDF sees the release of several new plug-ins that add functionality to the brand-new Acrobat 3D, the foundation of a PDF/A resource center by a pair of Swiss and German companies and news regarding the continued integration of Enfocus Software and its parent, Artwork Systems. To top off a bumper week for PDF news, absolutePDF has released a new Freeware application for the conversion of ASCII text to PDF.

Enfocus announces PitStop Professional 7

Enfocus Software has announced that it will launch a major update to its flagship product, PitStop Professional, at the IPEX show in Birmingham. According to Enfocus, the updates PitStop Professional version 7 focus on productivity and usability. At the same show, Enfocus will also unveil PitStop Automate, a task-based production automation tool aimed at design studios, ad agencies, printers and publishers.

Adobe launches Acrobat 3D

Adobe has announced the immediate availability of a powerful new addition to the Acrobat Family. Not only will Adobe Acrobat 3D incorporate all of the features of Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional, it will also add comprehensive support for 3D design information from major CAD applications. Perhaps the best news for the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) set is that the new product facilitates the distribution of its designs in a form that is secure, lightweight and above all, truly 3D.

Ubiquitous PDF: Cellphones as scanners

Ever wished you could simply scan and send whiteboard notes without having to worry about re-typing them? Courtesy of an online service from scanR, it seems that is now possible to do just that using nothing but a camera phone. Images sent to the service are then forwarded as PDF files via email or fax, fixing alignment issues and cleaning up background noise en route.

FormRouter announces new pricing for Reader-enabling service

FormRouter, Inc. has announced new pricing options for organizations deploying PDF forms that require extended rights such as local save and digital signatures. FormRouter is currently the only PDF Application Service Provider (ASP) licensed by Adobe to activate PDF usage rights for customers within North America.

Upstartle adds PDF support to web-based document editor

Silicon Valley-based Upstartle has announced the latest round of new features in its web-based, collaborative document editor. Entitled Writely, the product is currently in a free, public beta phase, but will ultimately be offered as a commercial service. The exciting part for Planet PDF readers, however, is the addition of PDF support.

Ubiquitous PDF: God's Debris available for free download

Cartoonist and novelist Scott Adams (of Dilbert fame) has declared that the PDF eBook version of his book God's Debris is available for download, free-of-charge for personal use. According to the author, the move is intended to foster discussion of issues raised in the book.
