Image Recognition Integrated Systems (I.R.I.S.) has released an update to its Optical Character Recognition (OCR) production solution. IRISPdf 4.0 boasts new features such as high-speed OCR, multiple output formats, image compression, simplified network configuration and integration and support for Dualstream Images.

Security Advisory: Acrobat and Adobe Reader plug-in buffer overflow

Adobe today issued a security advisory relating to a vulnerability in Adobe Acrobat and Reader. Identified as a buffer overflow within a core plug-in that is part of both products, the vulnerability could be exploited to crash the application with an increased risk of malicious code execution.

ARTS PDF releases Crackerjack 5.1

ARTS PDF has released an update to its popular ARTS PDF Crackerjack software. The software vendor has called Crackerjack 5.1 its biggest ever dot release, and the new version adds support for image editing and imposition. For the initiated, imposition refers to the shuffling of pages so that they will appear in the correct order when printed and bound.

Software602 releases Print2PDF 5.0 Server Edition

Software602 has released a server-based PDF creation tool that boasts a redesigned GUI and allows for one-click PDF creation. Print2PDF 5.0 Server Edition allows network users to assemble PDF documents from multiple sources and apply digital signatures. The new version even supports all 128-bit RC4 PDF security permissions, including low-resolution printing and text access for screen-reading devices.

Quite Software releases Quite Imposing Plus 2.0

Lochawe, Scotland-based developer Quite Software has announced the release of version 2.0 of its well-known desktop imposition product. Quite Imposing Plus 2.0 offers a swag of new features, including support for Acrobat 7 on Windows and Mac, the use of XML to describe imposition tasks, Bates Stamping, n-up centering and PDF/X.

Appligent releases PDF Foundry

Appligent recently announced the release of a server-based application that allows the creation of PDF from PostScript and TIFF data streams. In addition to its PDF creation capabilities, PDF Foundry can correct malformed PDF or add encryption and document information to existing PDF files.

Aloaha releases Digital Signature Pack

Aloaha Software recently announced the release of a software package to enable qualified digital signatures. Aloaha's parent company, Wrocklage Intermedia GmbH, has created a package to accelerate the acceptance of digital signatures/e-ID Cards by creating an easy way to digitally sign documents. The package includes a PC/SC capable Smartcard Reader, a smartcard and the Aloaha PDF Suite -- all of which combine to create digitally signed PDF documents from Windows applications.

PDF Webinars to offer Section 508 clinic

PDF Webinars has announced that it will be running a Section 508 clinic in early August. The two-part clinic targets U.S. Federal Government agencies who need to produce Section 508-compliant PDFs and private sector companies and contractors who work with U.S. Federal agencies. Attendees will learn how to best use new tools in Acrobat 7 to make legacy PDFs accessible, and will cover strategies for making accessible forms from scratch.

Adobe Reader flaw solved by free upgrade

Last week, Adobe Systems acknowledged a vulnerability in versions of Adobe Reader written for UNIX platforms. The flaw, first reported by security firm IDefense, allows a buffer overflow to be exploited to execute arbitrary code under the privileges of the local user.
