Adobe Reader flaw solved by free upgrade

Last week, Adobe Systems acknowledged a vulnerability in versions of Adobe Reader written for UNIX platforms. The flaw, first reported by security firm IDefense, allows a buffer overflow to be exploited to execute arbitrary code under the privileges of the local user.

PDFlib releases new text extraction package

PDFlib Text Extraction Toolkit (TET) extracts text from PDF documents, converting it to Unicode strings while preserving font and glyph information. The toolkit is currently available as a library, component and a command-line tool.

Airbus standardizes on Adobe Acrobat 7

Adobe recently announced that the Toulouse, France-based Airbus has elected to standardize it's worldwide operations on Adobe Acrobat 7. 32,000 seats of Acrobat -- spanning both Standard and Professional flavors -- will be rolled out over the rest of the year to streamline the international aircraft manufacturer's document generation, collaboration, security and archival processes.

Ubiquitous PDF: OCR pioneer's essays now available in PDF

The website is making available in PDF format a collection of essays written by technological pioneer Ray Kurzweil from 2001 - 2003. Among other things, Kurzweil is known for his innovation in the field of optical character recognition (OCR), which ultimately led to the creation of the world's first flatbed scanner and the development of print-to-speech assistive technologies.

Adobe patches security hole in Reader, Acrobat

Last Wednesday, Adobe Systems acknowledged a vulnerability in both Adobe Reader and Acrobat that could be exploited using malware to release sensitive system information. Under certain circumstances, it is possible to discover the existence of local files on an end-user system using XML scripts.

FormRouter, Adobe join forces to offer low-cost Reader Extensions service

FormRouter announced last week announced a new subscription pricing schedule for its LiveCycle Reader Extensions Service. The service allows subscribing organizations to deploy individual PDF forms with advanced usage rights such as digital signatures functionality and the ability to fill and save them offline.

LineType Software releases digital signature tool

LineType Software, Inc., a developer of electronic document tools for design professionals, has announced the release of the Banjo Digital Signature plug-in for Adobe Acrobat. The new plug-in is designed specifically for architects and engineers, and the company web site describes it as "the first digital signature tool designed to meet the needs of design professionals and the legal requirements of professional licensing boards."

Ubiquitous PDF: US not safe from electronic attack

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has thus far failed to adequately secure internet infrastructure. The Government Accountability Office has released a PDF report that states that the US is not prepared for the possibility of a cyber-emergency, and that there could be serious consequences.
