PDF played a part in a number of sessions that were officially outside the PDF track this year. The conference, staged in Sydney's CBD, has evolved from a strong XML and SGML base, which makes the increased prominence of PDF an encouraging sign for Adobe, whose focus in recent years has been on the integration of XML and PDF.
The recently published "9/11 Report" is a 585-page document detailing the investigation of the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. Being sold at major book stores, it's also freely available online in PDF. However, the downloadable version fails to take advantage of the format's navigational capabilities -- i.e. bookmarks, interactive index, etc. -- that could have made the PDF version much easier to read or browse. We've created and posted an improved version.
